Overheads resulting from research funding support the infrastructure of the institute like running costs for large equipment, animal facilities or special equipment that is commonly shared.
The majority of third party funds are contributed by the German Research Foundation, the Federal Ministry for Education and Research, and the Research Programmes of the EU. Additional funds are applied for at foundations and the industry.
In 2010, the budget of third party funds of the MDC was nearly 26 million Euro, distributed over more than 300 projects.
The Max Delbrück Centrum is an attractive research center for people from all over the world. A fifth of the 52 groups are not headed by German scientists and among the about 1000 researchers in MDC, you can find more than 50 different nationalities.
The MDC has its own programme for recruiting excellent scientists from different countries – PhD and Postdoc fellowships, Delbrück- and Cecile Vogt fellowships for early independence of excellent scientists. And there are also Helmholtz-Junior groups, funded by the Helmholtz Initiative and Networking Fund.
And furthermore, the MDC is an excellent place to get funds from the EU – we host several Marie Curie fellows, at the moment 4 ERC Starting and Advanced Grant holders - and many groups are involved in EU cooperation networks. The cooperation large scale project EURATRANS is coordinated in MDC.
