Administration

The administration at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) advises and supports scientists. The following departments provide all necessary administrative and technical services.

Science Administration

Animal Facilities

 

The Animal Facilities Department at the MDC is responsible for organizing the breeding and keeping of all our laboratory animals as well as safeguarding their health and hygiene. The department also advises scientists on how best to conduct experiments with animals.

Biological and Laboratory Safety

 

The Department of Biological and Laboratory Safety is responsible for developing laboratory health and safety concepts and monitoring their implementation. Its role is therefore to minimize any possible hazards involved in conducting laboratory experiments, operating technical equipment, or carrying out office work.

Communications

 

Trust in biomedical research can only be achieved through an open dialogue with society. Our communications are not just intended for the media, but also for schools, policymakers, and interested citizens as well as our partners and our staff. We report with transparency and accuracy on all MDC matters.

Graduate Office

 

The Graduate Office is a central service provider for all MDC PhD students. Its services include the annual project assessment carried out by the PhD Project Committee, organizing scientific lectures and seminars, and providing support with matriculation and career development.

Postdoc Office

 

The MDC Postdoc Office supports the career development of our postdoctoral researchers by offering orientation sessions, courses, career counselling, mentoring, and coaching. Our goal is to support Postdocs in their career planning and advancement. Whether they aim at staying in academia, switching to a career in industry, science management or science communication, or whether they plan to found their own company  -  we offer resources and contacts to help them find the way into their individual professional future.

Research Funding

 

Scientists at the MDC assist in the funding of research by applying for and managing international, European, and national grants (third-party funding).

Scientific Computing

 

The Department of Scientific Computing operates the central high-performance computer and data storage systems at the MDC. It works closely with the research groups to identify their needs for computing and mass storage capacities at an early stage and to plan, purchase and operate accordingly.
The department advises and trains researchers on the efficient use of available resources.

Scientific Directorate Office

 

The Scientific Directorate Office supports the Scientific Director and the Vice Director in their operational and strategic tasks. It works closely together with the center’s departments as well as with external organisations. In addition, it supports the Executive Board in the strategic development of the center.

Administration and Infrastructure

Central IT

 

The IT Department forms the central control hub of the MDC’s information technology infrastructure. It creates the technological conditions necessary for the working groups to conduct their scientific research and for staff to carry out administrative processes.

Central Services

 

The Central Services Department is an all-round service provider, ensuring that organizational processes at the MDC have the resources they need to enable the successful work of all working groups, departments, research fields, and employees.

Finances

 

The Finances Department coordinates and oversees the general financial situation of the MDC, including its internal and external accounting, budget control, and liquidity management. This department is also responsible for compiling the MDC’s annual financial statements.

Internal Audit

 

The Internal Audit Department performs independent auditing and consulting services on behalf of the Board of Directors. Its role is to improve, for example, business, management and monitoring processes through organizational and system audits and compliance checks.

Funding Resources Management DZHK

 

The MDC is a member of the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), which brings together non-university research centers and university clinics in collaborative research projects. The Department of DZHK Funding Resources Management within the MDC is responsible for managing and allocating DZHK funding.

Legal Affairs

 

The Department of Legal Affairs & Technology Transfer is the single point of contact for all legal queries. It is also responsible for managing the commercialization of the MDC’s research findings.

Library

 

The MDC Library provides a modern collection of scientific literature, information, and media in conventional and electronic formats. The literature in the library is oriented towards the MDC’s specialist research areas.

Personnel

 

The Personnel Department is responsible for all areas of human resources management at the MDC. Its main duties include looking after the needs of employees and guest researchers, providing management consultation, and overseeing personnel planning and reporting and the monthly payoff.

Purchasing

 

The Purchasing Department organizes the acquisition of all goods and services for the MDC, including planning and construction services. Additional tasks include receiving goods, warehouse management, and central device management.

Staff Development

 

Staff development  and the postdoc office are new structural units as a result of the internal organisation projekt talent management. Beside the PhD office all three organisational units are established directly below the directorate and work together in close cooperation also with the respective departments and including the staff council, the women's representative and the Career and Training Committee with the following priority tasks:

  • Human Resources Development and further training for the non-scientific staff as well as offers for all employees
  • Reconciling of work and family life
  • Occupational health
  • Vocational training
  • Integration of refugees

TFM Construction

 

The core activities of the Department of Technical Facility Management (TFM) Construction include participating in the campus’s strategic expansion plans and helping to prepare, plan, and implement all MDC construction projects.

TFM Operation

 

The Department of Technical Facility Management (TFM) Operation assumes operational responsibility for the MDC’s research facilities and technical infrastructure, ensuring a high degree of availability and reliability as well as compliance with statutory safety standards.
