Dr. Melissa Little, a world leader in stem cell research, successfully developed the first kidney organoid. In advance of her lecture at the Max Delbrück Center, she shares insights about the road to that eureka moment, the journey since and the state of stem cell and organoid research today.

A team in the Hübner and Diecke Labs at the Max Delbrück Center have shown how human and non-human primate hearts differ genetically. The study, published in “Nature Cardiovascular Research,” reveals evolutionary adaptations in human hearts and provides new insights into cardiac disease.

Researchers in Berlin and Düsseldorf have implicated a new gene in the progression of Huntington’s disease in a brain organoid model. The gene may contribute to brain abnormalities much earlier than previously thought. The study was published in “Nature Communications.”

Melissa Birol of the Max Delbrück Center is looking to understand early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Her focus is on the interplay between the lipid metabolism of nerve cells and the spread of tau protein. The Alzheimer Research Initiative is funding her work with 193,500 euros.

The Einstein Center 3R will continue for a second funding period. Following a successful interim evaluation, the board of the Einstein Foundation Berlin has approved funding for a further two and a half years for research into alternatives to animal testing. Partners include the Max Delbrück Center.

To attract renowned researchers to Berlin, Stiftung Charité is funding “Visiting Fellows” with 1.5 million euros. One of them is Manuel Irimia from Barcelona. He is coming to the Max Delbrück Center for three years to analyze gene regulation.
