Institute & Campus September 28, 2017 A happy reunion in San Francisco Many alumni are now advancing their careers far away from Berlin. In August, the MDC visited some of them abroad. This premiere, titled “25 years of the MDC: Research highlights and career pathways,” took place in San Francisco. Science January 23, 2017 MDC alumnus Yves Muller: Crystal clear advice for postdocs “Ideally as a postdoc you should aim to publish as last as well as first author and gather experience writing grants,” says Professor Yves Muller, formerly researcher at the MDC. The crystallographer emphasises that postdocs wanting to become group leads need to enjoy independence and be ready to follow their own ideas. Science November 25, 2016 Finding the right chemistry for proteins and scientific relationships Dr Irene Coin applies chemical knowledge to biological problems, revealing structural information about proteins. At the MDC Alumni Talks and Career Pathways lecture series she spoke about her work and described how human elements can be the secret to the best scientific relationships. Science July 21, 2016 Yasuyuki Fujita: helping cells recognise bad neighbours MDC alumnus and Professor Yasuyuki Fujita has good advice for budding scientists who want to establish their own group. In his research he investigates the interactions between cancer cells and their neighbouring cells, aiming to find a way to help healthy cells recognise tumour cells and kill them. Science June 30, 2016 Outside of academia – still on the forefront of curiosity-driven thinking MDC Alumna Sonya Dumanis came to one of the MDC's Career Talks to discuss and reflect on her experiences at the MDC, in and outside research. Science February 19, 2016 Gerd Kempermann and the self-renewing brain Only a few years ago it was dismissed as impossible. Now it is the research subject of MDC alumnus Prof. Gerd Kempermann: the self-regenerating brain. Kempermann is studying the function of brain stem cells in the learning process and how and why an active life makes mice (and people) mentally fit. Science January 05, 2016 By Dr. Luiza Bengtsson Getting into shape Tom Rapoport, speaker of the second MDC lecture, dedicated his career to the endoplasmic reticulum... Science September 28, 2015 MDC Alumna Henriette Uhlenhaut: “Getting things moving in health research” Nina Henriette Uhlenhaut really gets around. The well-traveled biotechnologist has worked in Braunschweig, Atlanta, Heidelberg, La Jolla, Berlin, and now Munich. During this time, Uhlenhaut’s research has also taken leaps and bounds, covering topics ranging from the molecular biology of plants to the regulation of genes that determine sex in mammals, to human hormone receptors. Institute & Campus October 14, 2014 Halfway around the globe – and possibly back again You might not remember his name, but if you were at the MDC from 2007 to 2010 you’d surely recognize Tiago Jose da Silva Lopes. During that time the Brazilian student completed his PhD thesis on the topic of "Systems biology analysis of the iron metabolism"; on the side, he helped establish the Beer Hour. Today, Tiago lives in Japan, where he works as a bioinformatics consultant at the University of Tokyo.
