The first international symposium on human gene therapy in Germany, a country in which this kind of research is highly controversial, was held at the newly founded Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in Berlin Buch. About two hundred scientists from Germany, the United Kingdom, the USA, France and Italy attended the meeting on "Human Gene Therapy and Mutant Animal Models" from March 26 - March 27.

A Unique Combination of Basic and Clinical Research - The Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) is a unique research center in a united Germany. It combines basic and clinical research. This is a continuation of a long tradition carried over from the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

Prof. Detlev Ganten, founding director of the Max Delbrück Centre for Molecular Medicine (MDC), Berlin Buch, has been elected a foreign, corresponding member of the medical faculty of the Polish Academy of Science. This was announced by Prof. Jozef Skapski and Prof. Adam Bielanski of the Polish academy in Cracow. This decision is a tribute to Prof. Ganten's scientific research on high blood pressure as well as his commitment to Polish science and culture.

Professor Jens Reich, molecular biologist at the Max-Delbrück-Centre for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in Berlin-Buch and co-founder of the civil rights movement "New Forum" in the former GDR is to receive the newly-endowed "Anna Krüger Prize of the Institute of Advanced Study of Berlin". Reich is the first recipient of this award, which is worth 50,000 German marks. Reich works at the MDC where he heads the "Bioinformatics" working group which deals with decoding of the human genome and its recording on a data base.
