A team at the MDC led by Professor Carmen Birchmeier has now shown just how varied these nuclei are. The study, which has been published in Nature Communications, can help us better understand muscle diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Press Release No. 29 July 10, 2020 Berlin Einstein Center for alternative methods in biomedicine The board of the Einstein Foundation approved the preliminary stage of a new Einstein Center for the development of alternative methods for animal testing in biomedical research. The aim of the planned center is to reduce or replace animal experiments. It will be established in cooperation with the MDC. Press Release No. 19 April 24, 2020 Berlin Laboratory animal report for 2019 Researchers at the MDC used a total of 44,525 animals – mostly mice – in studies in 2019. That is 7,553 less than in the previous year. The MDC has now submitted these figures to the regulatory authority, the Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LaGeSo). Press Release No. 62 December 20, 2019 Berlin Strong change of course for muscle research Scientists have discovered a new subtype of muscle stem cells. These cells have the ability to build and regenerate new muscles, making them interesting targets for the development of gene therapies. Press Release No. 25 October 26, 2017 Berlin Working together to reduce severe suffering for laboratory animals in Europe Major international event in Berlin generates collaboration between 16 countries: The RSPCA and the MDC are bringing together experts from 16 countries to reduce the number of lab animals experiencing severe suffering. Press Release No. 17 August 27, 2014 Berlin New Research Method Opens Door to Therapy with Human Muscle Stem Cells "Muscle stem cells, which we also refer to as satellite cells, can awaken in their stem cell niche... Press Release No. 28 November 09, 2009 Berlin First International Graduate School for Skeletal Muscle Diseases Partners: MDC, Charité Berlin and Université Pierre et Marie Curie Paris VI There are approximately 400 different skeletal muscle diseases, each of which is rare and incurable. Furthermore, there is no structured platform for PhD training in this field. This shall soon change. Press Release No. 29 September 15, 2006 Berlin Helmholtz Humboldt Recipient Henk Granzier Begins Research at MDC The biologist, muscle researcher, and Helmholtz Humboldt Research Award recipient Henk Granzier, professor at Washington State University in Pullman, WA, USA, began his research sojourn at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch in the middle of September 2006. Press Release No. 3 September 28, 1995 Berlin Gene-Puzzle The genetics of complex diseases with widespread prevalence, such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases, to a great extent still remains a puzzle which scientists and medical doctors hope to better understand by looking deeper into the human genome. Press Release No. 5 September 28, 1995 Berlin CEPH and Genethon - French Genome Research In France, there has never been national policy of human genome research. Instead, the Nobel Prize winner Jean Dausset and Daniel Cohen, at that time Dausset's assistant, started their own, privately financed project by founding the Centre d'Etude du Polymorphisme Humaine (CEPH) in 1982. They set up an extensive collection of genetic material (DNA) from families with several members which may be used free of charge by genecists from all over the world.
