Thomas Sommer, interim Scientific Director of the MDC congratulates Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna on winning the Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

Because they have the opportunity to discuss stem cells with a heart surgeon and a basic researcher andbecause they can visit biotech companies, examine cells in the laboratory, discuss ethics and understand the CRISPR-Cas9 gene scissors.

LifeTime is one of the six winners of an EU-wide competition in which ambitious and forward-looking research projects are selected and funded. This was officially announced by the European Commission on Tuesday. The coordinators of LifeTime in Berlin and Paris were pleased that they can now begin the actual work. Chancellor Merkel praised the initiative.

Our body’s cells are constantly changing. But which of these changes are healthy developments and which lead to serious diseases? This is what LifeTime, a new transnational and interdisciplinary initiative of leading European researchers, aims to discover. The consortium is jointly coordinated by the MDC and the Institut Curie in Paris. It has now cleared an important hurdle.

The artist Emilia Tikka spent three months at MDC labs. She was curious about CRISPR and whether genetic reprogramming could enable a “rejuvenation” of human cells in the future. Now, the results of her residency called “AEON – Trajectories of Longevity and CRISPR” are being shown at STATE Studio Berlin.
