Press Release No. 53 November 30, 2020 Berlin New PhD programs kick off at the MDC PhD candidates now have the opportunity to apply for two new training programs. The EU is supporting the program for talented early-stage researchers at the MDC and other European research institutions to the tune of €4 million per network. Press Release No. 51 November 05, 2020 Berlin The ebb and flow of brain ventricles Enlarged ventricles in the brains of people with multiple sclerosis were previously considered a sign of tissue loss. But a team at the MDC and ECRC demonstrated that this expansion often recedes. A study published in JCI Insight now shows that the process observed in mice is transferable to humans. Press Release No. 47 October 16, 2020 Berlin MDC research funded by NIH award A large grant under the NIH’s 4D Nucleome Program supports MDC scientist Ana Pombo’s work as a member of a multi-team consortium led by UC San Diego in the U.S. The team will investigate how DNA organizes inside cell nuclei and functions in space and time. Press Release No. 46 October 14, 2020 Berlin Organoids, open science and reality TV from the lab – the MDC at the Berlin Science Week When virologists become reality TV stars, biologists dream of life without illness, researchers debate organoids vs. animal testing with the general public, and biomedical scientists discuss the possibilities of AI, it can only be Berlin Science Week. This year, the MDC is holding a number of virtual events. Press Release No. 42 September 24, 2020 Berlin An in-depth atlas of the heart Researchers from three continents have produced a first extensive draft of a cell atlas of the human heart to understand how this vital organ functions and to shed light on what goes wrong in cardiovascular disease. As the team reports in Nature, it reveals a huge cellular and molecular diversity. Press Release No. 40 September 22, 2020 Berlin Invitation: Breaking Boundaries – Virchow 2.0 Berlin has a long tradition as a medical metropolis and also the potential to become an international hub for the life sciences, comparable to Boston. On September 28, researchers from both cities will discuss this issue with the Governing Mayor of Berlin, Michael Müller. Press Release No. 39 September 07, 2020 Berlin Towards a cell-based interceptive medicine in Europe Hundreds of researchers, clinicians, industry leaders and policy makers from all around Europe are united by a vision of how to revolutionize healthcare. In a perspective in Nature and the LifeTime Strategic Research Agenda they now present a roadmap of how to leverage the latest scientific breakthroughs and technologies over the next decade, to track, understand and treat human cells throughout an individual’s lifetime. Press Release No. 30 July 13, 2020 Berlin Janggu makes deep learning a breeze Researchers from the MDC have developed a new tool that makes it easier to maximize the power of deep learning for studying genomics. They describe the new approach, Janggu, in the journal Nature Communications. Press Release No. 29 July 10, 2020 Berlin Einstein Center for alternative methods in biomedicine The board of the Einstein Foundation approved the preliminary stage of a new Einstein Center for the development of alternative methods for animal testing in biomedical research. The aim of the planned center is to reduce or replace animal experiments. It will be established in cooperation with the MDC.
