Press Release No. 51 November 05, 2020 Berlin The ebb and flow of brain ventricles Enlarged ventricles in the brains of people with multiple sclerosis were previously considered a sign of tissue loss. But a team at the MDC and ECRC demonstrated that this expansion often recedes. A study published in JCI Insight now shows that the process observed in mice is transferable to humans. Press Release No. 26 June 17, 2020 Berlin Jan Philipp Junker receives Helmholtz AI grant MDC researcher Jan Philipp Junker and his collaborator Maria Colomé-Tatché at Helmholtz Center Munich have received a €200,000 grant to improve big data processing to better understand how gene networks are wired together during development and disease. Press Release No. 21 April 30, 2020 Berlin Support for SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics The LabHive digital platform aims to provide necessary resources to diagnostic centres to enable more tests for SARS-CoV-2. Tobias Opialla from the MDC is one of 15 volunteers who has been involved in the project since the #WirvsVirus Hackathon organized by the German government. Press Release No. 16 April 13, 2020 Berlin Diagnostics, meet CRISPR A new diagnostic test to quickly and easily monitor kidney transplant patients for infection and rejection relies on a simple urine sample and a powerful partner: the gene-editing technology CRISPR. Michael Kaminski, who developed it, leads a new Emmy Noether Group at the MDC & Charité. Press Release No. 8 February 20, 2020 Berlin Joining forces for the science metropolis To strengthen Berlin’s reputation as an international science hub, the capital’s non-university research institutions have come together to form Berlin Research 50 (BR 50). Together, they want to develop research strategies and foster dialogue between science, politics and society. The initiative will also facilitate and strengthen cooperation with Berlin’s universities. Press Release No. 6 February 17, 2020 Berlin What statins do to muscles Muscle pain and cramps are common side effects of statins. As an MDC and Charité research group now reports in Scientific Reports, the cholesterol reducers actually influence thousands of genes in muscle cells – thereby hindering cell growth and division. Press Release No. 2 January 16, 2020 Berlin Neuromuscular organoid: It’s contracting! MDC researchers established a new model to study neuromuscular development and disorders. For the first time two distinct human tissues co-developed in the lab from one progenitor cell type and self-organized into a complex, functional neuromuscular organoid. Press Release No. 1 January 16, 2020 Berlin PlasmidFactory partnership to continue Harnessing jumping genes to advance gene-therapy cancer treatment: In an effort to optimize the Sleeping Beauty system, the MDCell – Helmholtz Innovation Lab is extending its collaboration with PlasmidFactory. Press Release No. 62 December 20, 2019 Berlin Strong change of course for muscle research Scientists have discovered a new subtype of muscle stem cells. These cells have the ability to build and regenerate new muscles, making them interesting targets for the development of gene therapies.
