Press Release No. 46 October 14, 2020 Berlin Organoids, open science and reality TV from the lab – the MDC at the Berlin Science Week When virologists become reality TV stars, biologists dream of life without illness, researchers debate organoids vs. animal testing with the general public, and biomedical scientists discuss the possibilities of AI, it can only be Berlin Science Week. This year, the MDC is holding a number of virtual events. Press Release No. 29 July 10, 2020 Berlin Einstein Center for alternative methods in biomedicine The board of the Einstein Foundation approved the preliminary stage of a new Einstein Center for the development of alternative methods for animal testing in biomedical research. The aim of the planned center is to reduce or replace animal experiments. It will be established in cooperation with the MDC. Press Release No. 21 April 30, 2020 Berlin Support for SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics The LabHive digital platform aims to provide necessary resources to diagnostic centres to enable more tests for SARS-CoV-2. Tobias Opialla from the MDC is one of 15 volunteers who has been involved in the project since the #WirvsVirus Hackathon organized by the German government. Press Release No. 19 April 24, 2020 Berlin Laboratory animal report for 2019 Researchers at the MDC used a total of 44,525 animals – mostly mice – in studies in 2019. That is 7,553 less than in the previous year. The MDC has now submitted these figures to the regulatory authority, the Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LaGeSo). Together, they want to develop research strategies and foster dialogue between science, politics and society. The initiative will also facilitate and strengthen cooperation with Berlin’s universities. Since early 2019 an Anti-Harassment Task Force, consisting of a broad cross-section of stakeholders, has been preparing guidelines for this very purpose.
