The EU is supporting the program for talented early-stage researchers at the MDC and other European research institutions to the tune of €4 million per network. Press Release No. 51 November 05, 2020 Berlin The ebb and flow of brain ventricles Enlarged ventricles in the brains of people with multiple sclerosis were previously considered a sign of tissue loss. But a team at the MDC and ECRC demonstrated that this expansion often recedes. A study published in JCI Insight now shows that the process observed in mice is transferable to humans. Press Release No. 26 June 17, 2020 Berlin Jan Philipp Junker receives Helmholtz AI grant MDC researcher Jan Philipp Junker and his collaborator Maria Colomé-Tatché at Helmholtz Center Munich have received a €200,000 grant to improve big data processing to better understand how gene networks are wired together during development and disease. Press Release No. 2 January 16, 2020 Berlin Neuromuscular organoid: It’s contracting! MDC researchers established a new model to study neuromuscular development and disorders. For the first time two distinct human tissues co-developed in the lab from one progenitor cell type and self-organized into a complex, functional neuromuscular organoid. Press Release No. 57 November 29, 2019 Berlin Käthe Beutler: "Do something!“ The Käthe-Beutler-Haus of the BIH is currently being built on the Berlin-Buch campus - the Medizinhistorische Journal now reports on the life of the Jewish paediatrician, researcher and mother. Press Release No. 53 November 13, 2019 Berlin Jan Philipp Junker named EMBO Young Investigator Some 27 young researchers have been selected for the prestigious EMBO Young Investigators Programme. Among this year’s awardees is Philipp Junker, a systems biologist at the MDC’s Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology. Press Release No. 49 October 23, 2019 Berlin Buch campus cycles the most The equivalent of almost 28 times around the equator – this was the distance covered by participants in the cycling competition “Wer radelt am meisten?” (Who cycles the most?). Berlin’s senator for sport announced the winners at a ceremony on Wednesday at the Olympiastadion. The Buch campus took first place in the category “Best Company.” Press Release No. 38 August 05, 2019 Berlin Google Maps for tissues Modern light microscopic techniques provide extremely detailed insights into organs, but the terabytes of data they produce are usually nearly impossible to process. New software, developed by a team led by MDC scientist Dr. Stephan Preibisch and now presented in Nature Methods, is helping researchers make sense of these reams of data. Press Release No. 32 June 25, 2019 Berlin MDC named a family-friendly employer The MDC in Berlin has received a certificate from audit berufundfamilie (audit workandfamily). In the future, MDC employees are to receive targeted support and assistance throughout different phases of their lives. Press Release No. 9 March 13, 2019 Berlin Oscillation in muscle tissue When a muscle grows or a muscle injury heals, some of the stem cells develop into new muscle cells. A research team at the MDC led by Carmen Birchmeier has now described in the journal “Genes and Development” how this process is regulated by two proteins produced in an oscillatory manner.
