The vision of the EU-LIFE Research Institutes EU-LIFE, the alliance of 14 leading Life Science Research Institutes in Europe announces its vision based on the lessons learned by COVID-19 pandemics on how Europe can prepare for future health crisis. Press Release No. 14 March 26, 2020 Berlin Coronavirus research at the MDC In light of the pandemic, the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) is pooling together its resources for projects that advance the understanding of SARS-CoV-2, while scaling down its regular research operations to a minimum. Here’s an overview of the MDC’s current collaborations and plans. Press Release No. 46 October 15, 2019 Berlin Gene mutation in the chloride channel triggers rare high blood pressure syndrome When the adrenal gland produces too much aldosterone, this often leads to high blood pressure and kidney damage (hyperaldosteronism). It has only recently emerged that several patients harbor a mutation in the gene for the ClC-2 chloride channel. Researchers led by Professor Thomas Jentsch have now been able to show for the first time how the altered channels cause the disease. Their results are reported in the journal Nature Communications. Press Release No. 43 September 23, 2019 Berlin Open Letter from EU-LIFE: Doubling the budget for "Horizon Europe" EU-LIFE, the alliance of 13 leading Life Science Research Institutes in Europe urges the EU Council and the European Parliament to double Horizon Europe’s budget compared to Horizon 2020 (H2020), to 150 Billion Euros and within it, to double the budget for discovery research, including the well-proven European Research Council. Press Release No. 34 June 26, 2019 Berlin EU-LIFE: six recommendations for Horizon Europe’s Health Cluster EU-LIFE, the alliance of 13 leading life science institutes in Europe, points out the increasing lack of opportunities for collaborative research in biomedicine at a European level and highlights how this is endangering long-lasting, positive impact in health research for the benefit of citizens. Based on the analysis on the barriers regarding participation in collaborative health research in Horizon 2020, six recommendations aim at contributing to improvement for the upcoming seven-year cycle of Horizon Europe. Press Release No. 16 June 26, 2018 Barcelona For a strong Horizon Europe EU-LIFE, the alliance of 13 leading life science research institutes in Europe, urges the European Parliament and the EU Council to push for a strong Horizon Europe. Press Release No. 2 February 06, 2018 Berlin How a Mutated Gene Triggers Hypertension Too much aldosterone causes hypertension. One cause is a mutation in the CLCN2 gene, which contains the blueprint for an ion channel of the adrenal cortex. Press Release No. 5 March 14, 2017 Berlin A European success story When the EU Commission founded the ERC in 2007, the new agency not only promised generous funding... Press Release No. 29 July 08, 2016 Berlin A “time switch” in the brain improves sense of smell When the brain processes olfactory stimuli, it differentiates between similar smells using subtly modulated signals. Brain examinations and behavioral studies in mice have now shown that neurons with inhibiting characteristics play a key role in this process. Press Release No. 27 November 04, 2015 Berlin Uptake mechanisms of cytostatics discovered How does a cytostatic like cisplatin or carboplatin actually get into the cell? Scientists at the MaxDelbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC) and the Leibniz-Institut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP) in Berlin, in cooperation with a Dutch group, have now succeeded in showing that the volume-regulated anion channel VRAC is 50 % responsible for active substance uptake. If one of the VRAC subunits LRRC8A or LRRC8D is down-regulated, cells take up considerably less of the anti-cancer drug. In addition to this finding, programmed cell death or apoptosis is also significantly disturbed when LRRC8A is missing. The researchers have thus identified a potential cause for therapy resistance.
