The Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology (BIMSB) was launched by thein 2008, supported by start-up funding from the and the . The scientific concept was initiated by Nikolaus Rajewsky, who is now leading the program and its further developments. So far, BIMSB received outstanding reviews in international scientific evaluation processes. BIMSB received 19 Mio € federal and state kick-off funding in total. Additional institutional funds were granted by the BMBF and Senate from 2013-2014. From 2015 onwards the Federal Ministry of Science and Education (BMBF) has committed to sustain an annual budget of 17.5 Mio € for the BIMSB research program.
