When virologists become reality TV stars, biologists dream of life without illness, researchers debate organoids vs. animal testing with the general public, and biomedical scientists discuss the possibilities of AI, it can only be Berlin Science Week. This year, the MDC is holding a number of virtual events.

Is it possible to grow organs in a petri dish? How does CRISPR gene editing work? What happens at the cellular level when SARS-CoV-2 infects the body? Our new online further education format “Lab meets teacher – digital!” enables teachers to gain an in-depth understanding of current research issues like these.

Anton Henssen works as a paediatrician and researches rare tumours at the Max Delbrück Center. Incidentally, he’s also a conceptual artist with way more to his paintings than meets the eye.

More than 250 students and 15 "Jugend forscht" award winners from all over Germany met at the Digital Forum from MINT-EC and MDC in February. They attended lectures and workshops on digital developments and methods and conducted experiments in the lab.

There are people who are open about the fact that they conduct experiments on animals – and claim they have good reasons for doing so. On November 5 in Berlin’s Urania theater, they fielded questions from the general public and injected reason into a debate often driven by emotion.

From 1 to 10 November 2019, the Berlin Science Week connected science communities with the public. Researchers from the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) contributed to this international festival at more than ten events. Here are some impressions.

How to save a functionally extinct species, animal testing in neurobiology, and innovative new cancer therapies – these are just some of the topics covered in the lectures series “New Avenues in Biomedicine.” The series, which includes contributions from three MDC researchers, offers the general public a lens into what’s happening in the world of science.

From 1 to 10 November 2019, researchers will gather in Berlin to discuss current issues - with each other and with the public. The Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) will be contributing to exciting events.

The dangerous life of the couch potato: People who spend too long sitting are at higher risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. In the citizen science project SMOVE, the MDC is joining forces with schoolchildren to research the relationship between environmental influences and sedentary behavior.

Lukas Baumert began researching cancer cells at the tender age of 17. The “Jugend forscht” prize winner has now spent a week in the MDC’s Blankenstein Lab learning how scientists develop gene therapies against cancer.
