We are continuously developing our state-of-the-art methods. Our (visiting) researchers can access equipment, methods, know-how and resources via service units, at all levels of imaging, data science, disease models and high-throughput technologies - all tailored to the individual needs of the research projects.

We are attracting talents from all over the world. Our center is international, and there are many leisure opportunities on the Buch campus: On a sunny day, you can stroll past towering trees, wildflowers and small groves through the sculpture park or meet up with colleagues on the meadows. You might visit an art exhibition, listen to a concert on the roof terrace of the MDC-BIMSB, get inspired at a lunch talk or go to a yoga class. Every Friday is a time to celebrate - our PhD community makes sure this happens.

In order to make our research visible and pave its way to clinical practice, we are networking with clinics, with Berlin's biotech industry, and maintaining a dialog with society. Our technology transfer office promotes ideas and projects with commercial potential and supports spin-offs and patent developments. We also make basic research visible. We ensure that all facets of our science are both accessible and understandable through the Long Night of the Sciences, the Berlin Science Week, discussions and hands-on courses for schoolchildren and teachers.

Our transfer to society

Our employees benefit from an extensive training and development program. It includes courses in languages and methods, IT training, coaching and career counseling, as well as sports and relaxation. Doctoral students can choose between several research schools that are cooperating with institutes in the USA, Israel and other countries. In addition, we offer a mentoring program that focuses on the career development of postdocs and early career researchers.

We are cooperating with many research institutions around the world. As a member of the Helmholtz Association, we exchange expertise intensively with the 17 other Helmholtz Centers throughout Germany, and we also collaborate with various German universities and institutes. In Berlin, we are particularly well connected, for example with the largest university hospital in Europe - the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Berlin Institute of Health at the Charité, as well as the excellent Berlin non-university research centers of Berlin Research 50.

Our family support

No matter whether you are a trainee, a doctoral student, a head of administrative staff or a principal investigator - employees at the Max Delbrück Center benefit from the TVöD Bund, the German collective bargaining agreement for the public service. The salary is based on a combination of pay grade and step, and increases with professional experience. In addition, there are special payments at the end of the year. Public employers and the unions negotiate new wages approximately every two years.

As early as the beginning of the 20th century, biomedical scientists were conducting research at our Berlin-Buch campus. At that time, the largest and most advanced brain research center in the world was established here. Today, the campus attracts Berlin's growing biotech industry and start-ups. Here we are working on one of the leading technology parks in Germany. Our research building in the center of Berlin is located in close vicinity to the Charité on the campus of Humboldt Universität.

Our history

Culture, nature and science are strongly connected with us. On campus there are various exhibitions: A sculpture park invites visitors to take a tour. A Jeanne Mammen exhibition shows paintings and sculptures by the artist, a close friend of Max Delbrück. There are busts commemorating prominent researchers who worked in Buch or had special ties to the campus. In our research building in Berlin Mitte, at MDC-BIMSB, we also maintain the close connection of art:science - in concert series, with exhibitions and discussions.
