Stem cells in the bone marrow form the cells of the blood throughout life. In the process, mistakes can occur leading to cancer. Together with a research team from Berlin, Heidelberg and Boston, Simon Haas describes in "Cell Stem Cell" a mechanism that allows the body to protect itself from this risk.

On Girls' Day, researchers at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) shared their thoughts on bioinformatics and let the students work with data sets and programs themselves. The bottom line: research is fun – even though or even because the tasks are complex.

Research teams at the MDC and partner institutions used a total of 52,132 animals in studies conducted in 2021 at the MDC’s locations in Berlin-Buch and Mitte. The MDC has now submitted these figures to the regulatory authority, the Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LaGeSo).

Isolate DNA, ask questions, make new friends: During the Easter holidays, refugee children and young people from Ukraine were able to take part in free experimentation courses and experience guided tours of MDC research laboratories at the Berlin-Buch Campus.

In order to put their genetic blueprints into action, human cells need RNA-binding proteins. Markus Landthaler observes these proteins while they interact with RNA – in order to understand how they work, and how to make use of them.
