Supporting, organizing and carrying out research are the main tasks of scientific funding bodies and institutions. ORION, a Europe-wide collaborative project in the life sciences and biomedicine, aims to make these processes more transparent to the public. The MDC joins eight other partners in the project, which kicks off in Barcelona this week.

Whether it's a pub quiz, enjoying art, a lab tour or a hands-on experiment – during the Long Night of Science on June 22, visitors in Berlin-Buch and Mitte can explore biomedical research at the Max Delbrück Center from many different perspectives. A look deep into the human heart is also on offer.

An open-source platform developed by researchers in Nikolaus Rajewsky’s lab at the Max Delbrück Center creates molecular maps from patient tissue samples with subcellular precision, enabling detailed study and potentially enhancing routine clinical pathology. The study was published in “Cell.”

A new online course aims to help researchers understand the benefits of Open Science. The ORION MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) for Open Science in the Life Sciences runs from 21 October for six weeks, it has been developed by staff and scientists based at the Max Delbrück Center.

CRISPR inspires scientists and artists alike – in different ways. At Berlin Science Week, the MDC presents the result of an artist residency on genome editing and a debate on whether we know enough about the genome to actually use such tools in humans.

The artist Emilia Tikka spent three months at MDC labs. She was curious about CRISPR and whether genetic reprogramming could enable a “rejuvenation” of human cells in the future. Now, the results of her residency called “AEON – Trajectories of Longevity and CRISPR” are being shown at STATE Studio Berlin.

On November 7, 2020, the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) and the Tagesspiegel are hosting the fifth edition of the Future Medicine Science Match. This year’s focus is “Artificial Intelligence in Translational Medicine.” MDC researcher Roland Schwarz is chair of the session on AI in basic research.
