MyoGrad

International Research Training Group for Myology

MyoGrad is the first structured doctoral training in muscle sciences worldwide. Highly qualified international doctoral students complete a bi-nationally supervised thesis in the field of muscle-related cell and molecular biology or clinical aspects of muscle diseases.

Why starting a PhD in MyoGrad?

Muscle wasting and weakness are devastating problems in patients with muscular dystrophies, cancer, cachexia of any cause, critical illness myopathy, and are increasingly affecting older individuals. The scope of the problems extends far beyond a group of relatively uncommon muscle diseases thus leading to a growing demand of excellently trained experts in the field of muscle research. These developments were taken into account when in 2010 the International Research Training Group for Myology – "MyoGrad" was established. The program is worldwide the first international structured platform to offer doctoral training in muscle sciences.

What is special about MyoGrad?

Students accepted by MyoGrad conduct a bi-nationally supervised doctoral thesis (co-tutelle de thèse) within one of the 7 projects of the training group. They enrol in both Berlin and Paris Universities (with tuition paid once) and do research work in Berlin as well as in Paris labs. At this early stage of their career they are already part of a very prestigious muscle science research community. After three years students present their thesis to a doctoral committee equally composed of German and French academic representatives and defend their work. Successful students obtain a joint doctoral degree from both universities. Participating institutions are Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin, Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris 6, Université Paris-Saclay, and Université Paris-Est Creteil.

What does the MyoGrad curriculum look like?

MyoGrad offers an English curriculum covering important aspects of muscle-related cell and molecular biology or clinical aspects of muscle diseases. In the course of the program MyoGrad students have also access to complementary training classes in transferable skills (writing scientific papers, grant application etc.) thus ensuring long-term scientific success. Teaching in Summer School settings, continuous communication between students and teachers in seminars and journal clubs face-to-face and online are the cornerstones of the educational concept.
