The scientific goal of HEIBRiDS is to conduct research around topic clusters that play a key role in the various core scientific disciplines of the Helmholtz centers and the ECDF, with emphasis on:
- Machine Learning and Data Mining
- Novel Hardware Concepts
For the 2019 intake HEIBRiDS will offer 10 PhD positions for outstanding students holding a master’s degree in quantitative sciences or related areas. The ideal applicant has experience in one of the research area of HEIBRiDS and enjoys working in an interdisciplinary environment. All students are required to meet the regular admission requirements of the Berlin universities' doctoral programs. As HEIBRiDS aims at interdisciplinary research there is no complete list of master’s degrees eligible for the program and the selection process will not solely consider the grades, but also the candidates' specialist knowledge in the proposed research area.
Duration of support: 3 years with the option of 1 year extension

Managing candidates’ applications will be arranged via an online application portal. After an eligibility check, the pool of eligible applicants will be shared with the project mentors to conduct the selection process and identify top candidates. Supervising teams of each joint research project will create a short list of preferences for candidates to be invited for personal interviews. Equal opportunities with regard to gender and minority rights, and particularly giving advantage to less-favored international regions to counteract fragmentation in international research shall be considered at all steps of selection process.
Candidates from the short-list are invited to the recruitment workshop. On-site interviews are conducted with prospective mentors including a presentation in front of all participants and with the selection panel as well as the future supervisor team(s).
The final decision will be based on the quality of the presentations, the interviews during the recruitment workshop and the availability of positions for the topics. A list of candidates to be hired and a reserve-list is compiled immediately after the recruitment workshop. Future supervisors have to submit their preferences and a statement whether they (respectively the Helmholtz Center or University that they are affiliated to) can sustain 25% of the funding for the doctoral student. Subsequently, the corresponding HR department reaches out to selectees. In case of rejection by a candidate, the successor from the reserve is nominated.
