Science after dark: gut feelings, art, and CRISPR

For one night only, the Max Delbrück Center in Berlin-Buch and the MDC-BIMSB in Mitte will open their doors to the interested public: On June 17th, 2023, visitors can tour laboratories, perform hands-on experiments, and explore connections between art and science. Here are some of the highlights.

Tackling rare kidney diseases

Michael Bader’s lab and six other European research groups are working to develop new methods to diagnose and monitor the progression of two kidney diseases. Both disorders are caused by an overactive unit of the body’s immune system. The researchers will receive €1.9 million for the project.

Sarah Hedtrich heads a guest group at the Max Delbrück Center. The Johanna Quandt Professor at the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité (BIH) is working on organ-on-a-chip models to develop new treatment options for rare hereditary and inflammatory skin and lung diseases.

Unwinding clues to disease in DNA’s 3D structure

The Robson lab at the Max Delbrück Center will be studying how the 3D structure of chromatin controls genes during development and in disease. Leveraging novel single cell methods, they will look at muscular dystrophies and retinal disease. Both seem to be linked to mutations that disrupt the function of non-coding DNA.

Communicating research in tandem

Two science communications projects of the Max Delbrück Center have received funding from the Stiftung Charité. About 100,000 Euro will go to Gary Lewin and illustrator Kat Menschik for a book on unusual animals in research, and to Russ Hodge and Jennifer von Schlichting for a board game on gene expression.

How diseases begin in the gut

A Berlin-based team led by ECRC researcher Dominik N. Müller is analyzing how inflammation of the intestinal mucosa affects blood vessels. They are still looking for study participants – especially people with inflammatory bowel diseases, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure and diabetes.

Protecting and repairing neurons

She wants to uncover the mechanisms behind inflammatory neurodegenerative diseases, while also developing new therapeutic approaches and testing them in clinical trials. With these goals in mind, Frederike Cosima Oertel is launching the Translational Neuroimmunology Lab at the ECRC.
