About the header image
Placenta

The placenta is the first developing organ during pregnancy in mammals. It ensures the exchange of oxygen and nutrients between mother and embryo, the disposal of embryonic waste products, produces hormones and influences the maternal immune system. The photo shows the cross-section of a mouse placenta halfway through embryonic development. The exchange of substances between mother and embryo takes place in the depicted labyrinth of the placenta, which brings both blood circulations into close proximity. The trophoblast cells marked in green serve as a barrier. The cell nuclei are marked in blue and the cell contact molecules in red.
