Many of us know first-hand how difficult it can be to balance family life with a career in science or any other job at the institute. This will always be a challenge, but institutes can do a lot to reduce the stress and make things easier. In the process, they increase their attractiveness to scientists and other potential employees.
A few years ago the German Hertie Foundation established a program called "Work and family" to set goals and guidelines in this area for institutes, companies, and other organizations. After an intensive process of examining the services we already provide at the MDC and input from our employees on new steps to take, the MDC was awarded the certificate from the berufundfamilie gGmbH.
The result of the audit was a catalogue of measurements to improve services that had already been implemented and to enact some new ones, such as the expansion of the Kindergarten and the program offering re-entry positions to fathers alike. In summer 2010, the MDC was awarded the certificate in a ceremony attended by Kristina Schröder, the German Minister for the Family, Seniors, Women, and Youth, and Peter Hinze, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of Business and Technology.
The award shows that the MDC has made significant efforts in supporting its families and has met a set of well-established guidelines in doing so.
