Frederick W. Alt: Fundamental roles of chromatin loop extrusion in antibody diversification mechanisms
Prof. Dr. Frederick W. Alt (Boston Children's Hospital | Harvard Medical School | Boston, USA)
Fred Alt has made seminal contributions to immunology, cancer biology and DNA repair. As a graduate student, he discovered a major form of genomic instability in cancer cells, gene amplification. Later on, his research on B cells provided key insights into how antibody diversity arises through VDJ recombination, somatic hypermutation and class switch recombination. Pioneering recent work, embedded into a vast range of other activities, follows up on these issues at the level of dynamic chromatin reorganization.
