To interfere in political discourses is not usual for science. But sometimes it is necessary, says Jens Reich. “As scientists, we need to show solidarity with the Friday strikes by the schoolchildren, and help ensure they are equipped with the appropriate detailed knowledge. And it’s not only about climate change, but mainly about how the entire planet is being dramatically overstrained,” he said at the start of the new “Breaking Boundaries” series of events on September 9. It was also an anniversary: 30 years earlier, the MDC scientist had signed the founding appeal of the “New Forum”, which raised grievances against East Germany. Shortly afterwards, the Wall fell.
We document Jens Reich's speech in words and pictures. As usual, our newsletter also offers you a review of the last few weeks, and a preview of the next month. Have fun reading!
