MDC Lecture: Insights from cryo-electron tomography
EMBL’s Dr. Julia Mahamid will give a lecture at the MDC on Nov. 4 titled “From translational stress response in eukaryotes to transcription-translation coupling in bacteria: unique insights from in-cell cryo-electron tomography.”
Dr. Julia Mahamid, Group leader at EMBL Heidelberg.
Cryo-electron tomography requires samples to be frozen rapidly to below ‑140°C, and uses electrons to image the samples down to the sub-nanometer from multiple angles. This results in numerous 2D images that can be computationally combined into a 3D composite. This method enables researchers to peer inside cellular compartments without disrupting the cell’s structure or macromolecular assemblies, providing a wealth of molecular information. Mahamid, an ERC laureate, and her lab are developing innovative techniques for cryo-electron tomography, and using them to study different systems, from the simplest bacteria to HeLa cells and Caenorhabditis elegans.
