Berlin Research 50 (BR50)

Prof. Maike Sander has been serving as the Scientific Director of the Max Delbrück Center since the end of 2022. A conversation with the internationally renowned stem cell and diabetes researcher about networks in science, the research metropolis Berlin and our center as a driver of innovation.

Studies conducted by research teams at the Max Delbrück Center and its partner institutions used a total of 54,402 animals in 2022. The Center has now submitted these figures to the Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LaGeSo).

The non-university research institutions in Berlin will work even more closely together in the future. Their network Berlin Research 50 (BR50), founded in 2020, has merged to form a registered non-profit association. Both directors of the Max Delbrück Center sit on the board.

With a position paper developed under the umbrella of Berlin Research 50, the non-university institutions of Berlin emphasize what is important for science in Berlin. They state ten demands that should be implemented by the future senate to strengthen Berlin as science metropolis.

To strengthen Berlin’s reputation as an international science hub, the capital’s non-university research institutions have come together to form Berlin Research 50 (BR50). Together, they want to develop research strategies and foster dialogue between science, politics and society. The initiative will also facilitate and strengthen cooperation with Berlin’s universities.
