Artificial organs that react to light could be a breakthrough in cancer research. In Berlin, scientists are researching how cells can be glued together by light impulses to form new tissue. Organoids are already replacing animal experiments.

2018

Science 2018 Breakthrough of the Year

Based on the potential of single-cell approaches for spurring advances in basic research and medicine, Science magazine recognized a combination of technologies enabling tracking development of organisms and organs cell by cell and through time as the 2018 Breakthrough of the Year. The work of three MDC-BIMSB research groups – Rajewsky lab, Junker lab, Zinzen lab – as well as the pan-European Initiative LifeTime, co-coordinated by MDC-BIMSB, were prominently featured and/or cited in the announcement, confirming the MDC-BIMSB as an international hotspot for single- cell research.
