KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

  • Sarah Hedtrich
    • Rethinking drug development: Covid-19 and the model dilemma of biomedical research.

Covid, as the most recent pandemic, once more put a spotlight on the current dilemma of biomedical research and translational efforts. In the initial phase, researchers worldwide scrambled to identify suitable models to study Sars-CoV-2 infections. However, interspecies-related differences such as host specificity, divergent immune responses, or even the unavailability of species-specific molecular tools and reagents hamper the research. Human-based models such as micro-engineered organs-on-a-chip or lung organoids are useful to study cytopathology and inflammatory tissue responses, but they lack complexity.

In this talk, I will allude to the translational crisis in biomedical research exemplifying Sars-CoV-2 research and beyond. I will also provide example how my lab develops and leverages complex human-based (disease) models with the ultimate goal to improve translation from bench-to-bedside. Finally, I will provide suggestions on how to leverage the benefits and balance the limitations of the currently available models.

    • A career outside academia - DNA analysis specialist at the crime lab institute of the Berlin Criminal Investigation Department (LKA)

When looking for jobs outside academia, sometimes the most confusing part is to know what the job you apply for really looks like? During your PhD you get to know the world of general or clinical research, but gain little to no experience in other work areas. Therefore, I will try to give a few insights into my personal dream job (that I never thought I would actually get) and will try to answer some of the following questions:  What does DNA analysis at a crime lab look like vs. what you see on TV? What is the day-to-day work you do as a DNA analysis specialist? Is it still science? What are the requirements of the job and what you should and shouldn´t do throughout the application process. What are the advantages and drawbacks of working in a public office?
