The world’s largest study into allergies has shown that the genetic risk factors for atopic dermatitis (eczema), hay fever, and asthma are generally inherited together. The findings of this study by a consortium of researchers, including research groups from the MDC and Charité, have now been published in “Nature Genetics”.

Ten new Genetic Risk Loci for Eczema Discovered

Researchers in Europe, Australia, Asia, and America have now discovered ten new risk loci for the chronic inflammatory skin disease eczema. Among the new candidate genes for eczema, the researchers came upon genes that are important for the innate immune system and for the development and function of T-cells which play an important role in specific immune responses. This emphasizes the importance of the immune system in the onset and progression of eczema. With the newly identified risk regions, a total of 31 risk regions for eczema are now known (Nature Genetics, doi:10.1038/ng3424)⃰ .

Now researchers at the MDC, the Charité University Hospital, the Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel, and several other collaborating laboratories have connected a region of human chromosome 11 to an increased risk of developing eczema. The finding is an important step toward learning why the symptoms appear and hints at a connection between dermatitis and other diseases.
