This year’s Alumni Day saw former employees return to the Max Delbrück Center to reunite with colleagues, forge new connections and support the development of others.

At the Max Delbrück Center, Cheryl L. Stucky learned the techniques for studying pain receptors that she now teaches to young scientists as a professor in the USA. On November 8, the alumna will visit her former workplace and give a talk on how skin cells contribute to the sensations of touch and pain.

With its "Back to the roots" Lab, the Max Delbrück Center aims to enable young international researchers to become ambassadors for Research in Germany in their home countries. It is one of the winners of the DFG Community Prize.

A young Berlin-based company called T-knife is a rising star in Germany’s biotech sector. Co-founder Dr. Elisa Kieback, along with colleagues, has catapulted the joint spin-off from the MDC and Charité to the top of the German biotech start-up universe.

What comes after my PhD, and how will my title help me? Not just at the MDC, young researchers are asking this question. The Career Day offers them opportunities to receive inspiration and pointers for their career planning.

Many alumni are now advancing their careers far away from Berlin. In August, the MDC visited some of them abroad. This premiere, titled “25 years of the MDC: Research highlights and career pathways,” took place in San Francisco.

A doctorate is a key milestone for everyone who wants to embark on an academic career. Numerous postdoctoral researchers – such as Tobias Opialla, who is still unsure about his next steps, or Marina Kolesnichenko, who wants to develop a career in science – are also working in the MDC laboratories. Both are taking up the opportunities provided by the MDC to guide their decision-making.
