From better 3D printers for biological structures to soil remediation with microorganisms – in the 60th round of “Jugend forscht,” regional students presented their exciting research projects on the Berlin-Buch campus.

Enno Klußmann of the Max Delbrück Center aims to help reducing the harmful consequences of high blood pressure by imitating a rare mutation. His plan to activate a specific enzyme called PDE3A to protect the heart and kidneys is now being funded with €400,000 by the Else Kröner-Fresenius Foundation.

Research teams at the Max Delbrück Center and its partner institutions used almost 17,000 fewer research animals in 2023 than in the previous year. The Center has now submitted these figures to the Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LaGeSo).

Dr. Isolde Dietrich was instrumental in developing cryo-electron microscopy. But who was she? One thing is certain: physics was her passion. And she wanted to make it easier for younger female colleagues to enter science. The Max Delbrück Center is now dedicating a research building in her name.

Cancer cells are capable of escaping chemotherapy and radiotherapy by activating a signaling pathway that prevents them from dying. Researchers led by Claus Scheidereit at the Max Delbrück Center have now described in Cell Chemical Biology two new compounds that block this escape route.

Studies conducted by research teams at the Max Delbrück Center and its partner institutions used a total of 54,402 animals in 2022. The Center has now submitted these figures to the Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LaGeSo).

Michael Bader has received over half a million euros from the LEO Foundation. The funding will help him develop a therapy for vitiligo and other inflammatory skin conditions. He hopes the answer lies in an ointment that inhibits ACE2, an enzyme that gained global attention during the coronavirus pandemic.
