As part of the IMMEDIATE project, a team led by ECRC researcher Friedemann Paul is investigating inflammatory precursors of diseases – and how nutrition and the gut microbiome influence the immune system. The project is receiving more than €7 million in EU funding.

The MDC has joined six other biomedical research institutes to nurture Europe’s next generation of physician-scientists. “Emerald”, the first European-wide PhD program for medical doctors will provide state-of-the-art training and help to bridge the gap between lab research and clinical practice.

PhD candidates now have the opportunity to apply for two new training programs. The EU is supporting the program for talented early-stage researchers at the MDC and other European research institutions to the tune of €4 million per network.

Scientists from ECRC and Technion in Israel have developed a novel method for rapid and accurate sensing of coronavirus without the need to rely on PCR amplification. The test now published in ACS Nano, also helps in the early diagnosis of cancer.

Ahead of the European Council negotiations on the next Multiannual Financial Framework, academic and industry leaders supporting the LifeTime initiative, have called members of the European Union into action. They ask to preserve the existing Horizon Europe budget and put forward ten recommendations to strengthen EU health research.

EU-LIFE, the alliance of 13 leading Life Science Research Institutes in Europe urges the EU Council and the European Parliament to double Horizon Europe’s budget compared to Horizon 2020 (H2020), to 150 Billion Euros and within it, to double the budget for discovery research, including the well-proven European Research Council.

EU-LIFE, the alliance of 13 leading life science institutes in Europe, points out the increasing lack of opportunities for collaborative research in biomedicine at a European level and highlights how this is endangering long-lasting, positive impact in health research for the benefit of citizens. Based on the analysis on the barriers regarding participation in collaborative health research in Horizon 2020, six recommendations aim at contributing to improvement for the upcoming seven-year cycle of Horizon Europe.

EASI Genomics: an EU-funded project to provide free-of-charge access to sequencing technologies

LifeTime is one of the six winners of an EU-wide competition in which ambitious and forward-looking research projects are selected and funded. This was officially announced by the European Commission on Tuesday. The coordinators of LifeTime in Berlin and Paris were pleased that they can now begin the actual work. Chancellor Merkel praised the initiative.

Finnish Artist Emilia Tikka will spend two months as Artist in Residence at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin to explore the genome editing technology CRISPR-Cas9. The unusual exchange between art and science will result in an exhibition at the Opening of STATE Studio Berlin.
