For Ukrainian graduate students, it can be a struggle to balance their careers and their worries about the war and their loved ones. A profile of two Ukrainian friends who work at the Max Delbrück Center now – one year after they had to flee from Kyiv.

At the end of September, a group of female medical scientists who have fled Ukraine paid a visit to the Max Delbrück Center. Their purpose was to find out more about the institute's work and explore professional career opportunities.

As a scientist you can be expected, even encouraged, to work in different countries during your career, but what about when that decision isn’t a choice. Anita Waltho, PhD Researcher at MDC, spoke with a Syrian refugee, who is now working at Campus Buch.

Shadi Hussein left Syria because of the war and now lives in Germany. An internship in the labs of MDC researcher Annette Hammes may help him re-enter his learned profession.
