Academia or science - The door remains open in both directions

"So far, we have been told over and over again that working for the industry is a one-way road with no return. In my view, Prof. Katharina Zimmermann from the Biberach University of Applied Sciences is the best example that it is possible after all. In general, the careers of the speakers seem to have been extremely diversified. None of them has a straightforward résumé. Moreover, it was striking that the women on the panel have many children. I was very glad to hear about that. Career and a family seem to be reconcilable after all.”

"If possible, I would take up an industry job straight after my master's degree. But I reckon that might be difficult without a PhD and work experience. I do not want to have to completely refocus at a later stage as a postdoc, if my fixed-term contract does not get extended. I want to have some planning certainty in future, especially with regards to starting a family."

"This is the first career day that I attend and I found it very helpful because now I have a realistic idea of the opportunities in the industry and academia after the PhD. Also, one of the take-home message that stuck in my mind is that if you know your next step in your career, you can start preparing for it since now. This can make less frustrating the search for the new position."

I am very pleased that the industry offers so many opportunities for scientists. My impression of the Career Day - regardless whether one chooses to stay in the academic area or not – is that there many doors to be opened. I definitely want to work as a postdoctoral fellow to continue learning new techniques and get more expertise. Nevertheless, the industry remains an option”.

“After well-organized Career Day I realized that being a researcher is not just about exploring the life science – it’s about exploring ourselves as well! So many highly educated speakers shared with their career’s story filled with enthusiasm and satisfaction. Do things which exciting you, believe in yourself, pursue given opportunities and make your decision wisely. “Follow your heart but take your brain with you” – this is my summary of that day".
