Dr. Anton Henssen, a scientist and physician at the ECRC, has received the Young Investigator Award of the 2020 Berliner Wissenschaftspreis for his cutting-edge research into childhood cancers. The award was presented by the Governing Mayor of Berlin at a ceremony on July 22 in front of the Rotes Rathaus.

Leif S. Ludwig has received the Hector Research Career Development Award for his research into the DNA of cellular power plants, the mitochondria. The award supports particularly talented young scientists as they embark on the first steps of their research careers.

Anton Henssen of the ECRC has been awarded the Kind Philipp Award for Pediatric Oncology Research for his study of ring-shaped DNA and its significance in the development of childhood neuroblastoma. A publication in the scientific journal Nature Genetics was decisive for this award.

Immunologist Kathrin de la Rosa investigates how the body’s own B cells protect us from infectious diseases. In the laboratory, she hopes to modify these cells in such a way that they produce powerful antibodies against pathogens which have overwhelmed our immune system until now.

MDC welcomes a new guest PI: Dr. Michael Sigal, a clinician scientist at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin who studies how stem cells contribute to gastrointestinal disorders and cancer. He is excited to partner with MDC to explore the gut’s interior lining on the single cell level.

Anton Henssen works as a paediatrician and researches rare tumours at the Max Delbrück Center. Incidentally, he’s also a conceptual artist with way more to his paintings than meets the eye.

On July 1, 2018, a new research group on Immune Mechanisms and Human Antibodies began its work at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC). The group is led by biologist Kathrin de la Rosa and is being funded by the Emmy Noether Programme of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

MDC structural biologist Prof. Udo Heinemann is much in demand; with his research activities and expertise he enjoys an outstanding international reputation. So it comes as no surprise that he has now been elected onto one of the Review Boards at the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
