MDC Stem Cell Researcher Dr. Gerd Kempermann Appointed Professor in Dresden

Dr. Gerd Kempermann, head of the research group Neuronal Stem Cells” at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch, Germany, has accepted an appointment as full professor at the Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) starting in June 2007. His research focuses on neuronal stem cells and neurogenesis in the adult brain. He is especially interested in determining to what extent physical and intellectual activity regulates adult neurogenesis and thus contributes to adaptation processes in the young and aging brain.

In Dresden

he will head a research group on Genomics of Regeneration”, whose aim is to

explore complex processes such as the new formation of nerve cells and their

development that are determined not by single genes but rather by networks of

genes.

Gerd

Kempermann, born in Cologne, Germany in 1965, studied medicine in his native

city and later in Freiburg. After completing

his PhD in 1993, he went to the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, USA on a German Research Foundation

(DFG) fellowship. In 2000 Dr. Kempermann, who is both a medical doctor and

neurobiologist, took a position at MDC in Berlin-Buch as head of the research

group Neuronal Stem Cells”.

In 1999 he

was awarded the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize for his research in neurogenesis. In

highly cited research studies published in the past years, he and his research

team have described how nerve cell development originating from stem cells is

characterized in detail in the adult brain. Besides his scientific work,

Professor Kempermann has also written articles for newspapers and magazines and

has served as an expert consultant – most recently at a German Parliament

hearing on revision of the country’s current stem cell legislation.
