Holger Gerhardt and Norbert Hübner join EMBO
Drs. Holger Gerhardt and Norbert Hübner, both senior scientists at the Max Delbrück Center, have been elected new members of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) — a recognition of their important contributions to our understanding of cardiovascular biology and disease.
Gerhardt is Group Leader of the Integrative Vascular Biology lab and a Principle Investigator at the Deutsches Zentrum für Herz-Kreislauf Forschung. His research has advanced the field of vascular biology by uncovering how blood vessels form, branch, and adapt during development and disease. His team combines advanced imaging, genetics, bioengineering and computational approaches to understand the molecular mechanisms that shape vascular networks and to develop strategies to promote tissue regeneration and cardiovascular health.
Hübner is Group Leader of the Genetics and Genomics of Cardiovascular Diseases lab. He uses a pioneering systems biology approach to reveal the gene networks involved in cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and translates his findings from experimental models to human disease. He has also spearheaded large-scale collaborative efforts to map the cellular and molecular architecture of the human heart and to better understand the molecular basis of cardiomyopathies and heart failure.
EMBO is one of the most prestigious organizations in the life sciences, bringing together more than 2,200 researchers from around the world. Members evaluate funding applications, serve on the EMBO Council and committees, or join the editorial boards of EMBO Press journals. They also help shape the direction of life science research in Europe, support early-career scientists, and strengthen research communities. New members can only be nominated and elected by existing members.
Gerhardt and Hübner will be formally welcomed at the organization’s next Members’ Meeting in Heidelberg, which will take place from September 30 through October 2, 2026.
