Bringing a new CAR-T cell therapy from promising results in the lab to critically ill cancer patients is anything but straightforward. Uwe Ohler and Gaetano Gargiulo have been awarded prestigious ERC Advanced Grants. With funding of €2.5 million each, they will spend the next five years investigating how protein synthesis is regulated and identifying vulnerabilities in pediatric brain tumors.

Researchers at the Max Delbrück Center have found a way to improve CAR-T cancer therapy to treat lymphoma. By additionally engineering the cells to express the receptor CCR7, they show in “Cancer Immunology Research” that the CAR-T cells penetrate lymph nodes more efficiently and kill cancer cells quickly.

In aggressive lymphomas, inflammatory messengers reprogram the “conductors” of the immune system, causing lymph node structure to collapse. A team led by Simon Haas describes in “Nature Cancer” this process for the first time using single-cell and spatial analyses.

Captain T Cell, a biotechnology spin-off from the Max Delbrück Center in Berlin, recently closed an equity financing round with both new and existing investors. It provides Captain T Cell with a total budget of EUR 20 million to develop next-generation T cell therapies for solid tumors.
