Helmholtz International Fellow Award for Prof. Yehudit Bergman from Israel

Cooperation with the Max Delbrück Center

The Israeli immunologist and cancer researcher Professor Yehudit Bergman of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (HUJI), Israel, has been honored with the Helmholtz International Fellow Award for her excellent research. The award allows her to strengthen an already existing cooperation with the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch. Professor Bergman is one of a total of 13 outstanding researchers from abroad who received the award, each of which is endowed with 20,000 euros. According to the Helmholtz Association, the award also includes an invitation to a flexible research stay at a Helmholtz center.

Through her groundbreaking research in cell differentiation, Professor Bergman has shown how key genes are controlled in such a way that a cell remains undifferentiated or develops into a specific cell type. Thus, her research enables new insights into the function of the immune system and the regulation of stem cells. For years she has worked closely with the cancer researcher and immunologist Professor Klaus Rajewsky (formerly Harvard, now MDC).

In addition, Professor Bergman has played a significant role in establishing the German-Israeli Helmholtz Research School Frontiers in Cell Signaling and Gene Regulation” (SignGene), which the MDC, the Hebrew University and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa founded in January 2013. Other partners are the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) and the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin. For the international research school for young scientists, which is to run for six years, the above-mentioned institutions were able to acquire 1.8 million euros from the Initiative and Networking Fund of the President of the Helmholtz Association.
